How to Choose the Right Pillow for Better Sleep

Choosing a pillow is an important thing. Our sleep depends on the pillow, and the mood throughout the day depends on the dream.

An uncomfortable pillow can cause a bad mood and worsen problems with the spine, neck, headaches, allergies, and asthma.

It is easy to get lost in the diverse offer of pillows on the market: there are pillows made of feathers, wool, silk, latex, memory foam, and recently – buckwheat, bamboo, and medicinal herbs! Antiallergic, with an aloe vera coating, with probiotic bacteria, and there’s no end to it.

Types of Pillows

To cope with the diverse offer of pillows, you need to know that pillows differ according to shape (rectangular, elliptical, anatomical), purpose (decorative, for car, for sleeping, for breastfeeding), filling (of feathers, silk, wool, memory foam, etc.) and filling (anti-allergic, antibacterial, with aloe vera coating, etc.)

You have probably already chosen the shape of the pillow and know its purpose (sleeping pillow). The filling is an essential thing, but it only serves as a bonus to a good pillow. What you really need to think about is filling pillows.

Although all types of pillows have their advantages and disadvantages, experts prefer latex and buckwheat pillows because they are firm, adaptable, long-lasting, and provide a good neck support.

Depending on your needs, you will probably also consider memory foam pillows or natural materials such as silk, wool, and cotton.

Feather and Down Pillows

Feather and down pillows are much fuller, more comfortable, and last longer than other types of pillows. However, they do not have good enough neck support and can cause allergies in sensitive people. Hypoallergenic and antibacterial feather pillows are also available, but their price is higher.

Advantage:

  • Soft and Comfortable
  • Long-Lasting
  • They Regulate Temperature Well
  • Allow Sleep in All Positions

Disadvantage:

  • High Price
  • Poor Neck Support
  • They can be a Trigger for Allergies and Asthma
  • Demanding to Maintain

Latex Pillows

Pillows made of latex, a soft and fine sponge made from rubber milk, have gained popularity thanks to their elasticity and hygienic properties. They are not as soft and full as feather pillows. But they provide excellent support for the neck and do not contract.

Advantage:

  • Excellent Neck Support
  • Good Flexibility
  • Do not Cause Allergies
  • Do Not Thin

Disadvantage:

  • Can be Expensive
  • A New Pillow can Have an Unpleasant Odor
  • They Must not be Exposed to Intense Heat and Direct Sunlight
  • They Must not be Mechanically Damaged

Memory Foam Pillows

Some people like memory foam pillows, which take on the body’s shape during sleep and return to their original position in the morning. These pillows provide excellent neck support but are “too thick” and not breathable. New pillows can have an unpleasant odor, which usually disappears after a few days.

Memory pillows lose their elasticity relatively quickly; they need to be changed every three years.

Advantage:

  • Good Neck Support
  • They Ideally Adapt to Body Shape

Disadvantage:

  • “Don’t Breathe”
  • Unpleasant Odor at First Use
  • They are Not Long-Lasting

Buckwheat Pillow

Buckwheat pillows are filled with thousands of buckwheat flakes that offer excellent neck support and good airflow. However, these pillows are heavy, noisy due to buckwheat flakes’ rustling, and some are too hard.

Advantage:

  • Relatively Cheap
  • Excellent Neck Support
  • Better Airflow Than Other Pillows

Disadvantage:

  • They are Relatively Heavy
  • Buckwheat Flakes Rustle When You Turn in Your Sleep
  • They are Too Hard for Some People

Polyester Pillows

As a rule, we do not recommend polyester pillows, whether they are made of microfiber or with gel balls because they do not provide good neck support and attract mites. On the other hand, these pillows are relatively inexpensive and can be easily replaced when worn out.

And one more good thing about these pillows is that you can wash them in the washing machine.

Advantage:

  • Cheap
  • Relatively Long-Lasting
  • You can Wash Them in the Washing Machine

Disadvantage:

  • Poor Neck Support
  • They can be a Nursery for Mites
  • Can Release Chemical Compounds

Pillows made of Wool, Silk, and Cotton

Pillows filled with cotton, silk, or wool are more expensive than other pillows. But people love their 100% natural filling, which provides good neck support. The disadvantage of these pillows is that they thin over time because their contents are compacted. They also absorb sweat and grease more than other types of pillows, which is why they need to be cleaned more often.

Advantage:

  • Good Neck Support
  • Comfortable and Soft
  • Suitable for People with Allergies
  • 100% Natural Material

Disadvantage:

  • Price
  • They are not as Full as Other Types of Pillows
  • They can Thin Over Time
  • Frequent Cleaning is Required

Price is Not so Important

When choosing a pillow, price is not so important. The high price of the pillow does not make it a better pillow for you. What really matters is how you feel sleeping on the pillow. In most cases, you can choose the right pillow without a big expense.

Try it in the Store

If you are in the store and have the opportunity to lie down and try on a pillow, be sure to do so. If this is not possible, lean the pillow against the wall and take your favorite sleeping position as if it were a wall – a mattress. Ask someone to look at how your neck stands. It should be flush with the spine.
